The Government of Canada tabled the 2017 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration levels plan. The new plan sets out the highest levels of new permanent residents to be welcomed to Canada in recent history. Under the plan, Canada will accept 310,000 new permanent residents in 2018. That number will grow to 330,000 in 2019 and to 340,000 in 2020, trending towards one percent of the population. By welcoming more newcomers, the plan aims to support Canada’s economic growth, drive innovation and address labour shortages across the country. Of the 310,000 newcomers for 2018, the plan sets 60 percent of them to come to Canada for work. Increased levels also allow Canada to uphold humanitarian commitments by offering protection to refugees...

Category B of the Nova Scotia Demand: Express Entry immigration stream briefly reopened on Saturday, Dec. 9. The Government of Nova Scotia said it would accept between 175 and 225 applications during this latest opening of the (NSDEE) Nova Scotia Express Entry program. As with previous openings, the NSDEE, which operates on a first-come, first-served basis, reached its intake limit quickly. Given this trend, candidates who are interested in applying to the stream are advised to be prepared by reviewing eligibility and ensuring all documentation is close at hand and up-to-date. The NSDEE is for highly-skilled individuals with a post-secondary education and the qualifications to integrate successfully into Nova Scotia’s labour market. Category B: Paid Work Experience in an Opportunity Occupation...

The Government of Canada has invited 2,750 candidates in the federal Express Entry pool to apply for Canadian permanent residence in a draw that took place Dec. 6. The cut-off Comprehensive Ranking System score for this draw was 452. The draw once again made use of the tie-break procedure that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced in June. While some candidates with a score of 452 received Invitations To Apply (ITAs), the tie-break means that only those candidates with a CRS score of 452 who entered their profiles in the Express Entry pool prior to a specified date and time received an ITA. In this case, that time and date was November 16, 2017 at 04:20:20 UTC. Today’s cut-off score...

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program, one of Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programs, has reached its maximum allotment of 5,500 nomination certificates for 2017. All applications that have already been submitted will be processed, the AINP said, but no further certificates will be issued until 2018. As of Dec. 4, the AINP reported that more than 3,050 applications were in the queue for assessing and processing. It’s possible that Alberta will benefit from a slightly higher allotment in 2018 as a result of the federal government’s Multi-year Immigration plan, which was announced Nov. 1. The federal plan includes an increased provincial program target of 55,000 for 2018, up eight percent over 2017’s target of 51,000. Through the AINP, Alberta can nominate prospective immigrants...

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says it will have the backlog of permanent residence applications through the old Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) largely cleared by the end of 2018. In an announcement on Dec. 3, IRCC said its goal is to finalize 80 percent of applications for permanent residence submitted on or before Oct. 1, 2017, by caregivers and their family members through the LCP. “The commitments the government has made today will mean that many Live-in Caregiver Program applicants who have faced long delays and family separation may soon reach their goal of permanent residence. As many as 6,000 more applications for permanent residence under the LCP could still be submitted, IRCC says. IRCC says this push has it on...
