Special measures for Iranian temporary residents in Canada extended

The Canadian authorities have declared their intention to maintain the support for Iranian temporary residents wishing to prolong their stay in Canada for an additional year.

This continuation applies to the policies set in February 2023, effective from March 1, 2024, and will remain in effect until February 28, 2025, as confirmed by the Canadian authorities.

Per the Canadian government's official site, those seeking to renew their temporary resident status or switch their status within Canada will still be exempt from paying application and biometric fees. Furthermore, Iranian residents possessing Canadian citizenship or permanent residency are eligible to apply for certain documents, including a limited validity Canadian passport and citizenship certificate, without any charge.

The initial introduction of these measures in February 2023 by the Canadian government was a response to the significant human rights abuses perpetrated by the Iranian regime, particularly during the suppression of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests.

These measures were designed to simplify the process for Iranian temporary residents to extend their stay in Canada and navigate between temporary residency categories, thereby enabling them to continue their education, employment, or family visits by applying for new permits within Canada.
