Governments of Canada and PEI invest in Higher Education in Prince Edward Island

The government of Canada and the government of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) are each investing $2.3 million to develop infrastructure at Holland College, Prince Edward Island. The investment forms part of Canada's Innovation Agenda, which aims to develop the country's capacity for innovation, job creation, and industry growth.

Holland College is a community college in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Established almost 50 years ago, it has gained a reputation for its trades and vocational programs, particularly in the disciplines of Culinary Arts and Marine Training.

In a press release accompanying the announcement, it was stated that the funding will be used to upgrade research and training space at the Charlottetown campus, with a specific focus on local industry needs. In particular, the investment will enable improvements to the electrical and mechanical systems of the campus, leading to increased environmental sustainability.

Referring to the announcement, Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, said, “This historic investment by the Government of Canada is a down payment on the government’s vision to position Canada as a global centre for innovation. That means making Canada a world leader in turning ideas into solutions, science into technologies, skills into middle-class jobs and start-up companies into global successes.”

Plans are in place to invest almost $23.3 million in P.E.I.'s universities and colleges over the next three years, with funding coming from the provincial and federal governments, private donors, and the institutions themselves.
