Traditionally, Canadian citizenship could only be inherited by the first generation born outside of Canada.

If a Canadian born abroad had a child overseas, that child would not automatically receive Canadian citizenship. Bill C-71 aims to change this by extending the eligibility to the second generation born abroad.

If this bill is approved, it would amend the Citizenship Act to allow more children born outside of Canada to Canadian parents to obtain citizenship. The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is expected to announce the finalized changes to this rule on June 19, 2024, as directed by the Ontario Supreme Court.
