Canada’s population is expected to increase by 57% to 62.8 million by 2073, driven mainly by immigration, according to Statistics Canada.
The annual growth rate is projected at 0.9% under the “medium-growth” scenario, with the population potentially ranging from 47.1 million to 87.2 million, depending on different growth rates.
By 2036, natural population growth in Canada is expected to become negative, making immigration the primary driver of population increases.
Despite this, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers by 20% over the next three years, citing a shift in the economic landscape and a reduction in labor shortages. Canada aims to admit around 485,000 permanent residents in 2024, increasing to 500,000 in the following two years.
