Starting August 11, 2024, IRCC introduced a temporary policy allowing certain Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) candidates to apply for an open work permit (OWP).
This policy is available to candidates who have a job offer, hold a valid work permit, or had one that expired on or after May 7, 2024. Eligible candidates must also have a support letter from their province or territory confirming their placement in an Expression of Interest pool or PNP application inventory.
The policy is aimed at providing more flexibility for candidates while their permanent residency applications are processed, allowing them to continue working without being tied to a specific employer. The policy remains in effect until December 31, 2024, though IRCC notes it may be revoked without prior notice.
This move helps skilled workers transition to permanent residency while addressing local labor market needs.
