Today on X (formerly Twitter), Justin Trudeau announced that there will be fewer temporary foreign workers in Canada, emphasizing stricter rules to ensure companies prioritize hiring Canadians. This statement comes amid broader discussions about rebalancing Canada’s immigration strategy.

Recent reports indicate that the Trudeau government plans to significantly reduce permanent resident intake, lowering it from 485,000 this year to 395,000 by 2025, with further cuts anticipated through 2027. Temporary resident numbers will also be scaled back, aligning with Immigration Minister Marc Miller’s recent comments about a “recalibration” of immigration volumes.

Details of the revised immigration levels are expected to be officially announced by Trudeau on Thursday, following their introduction in the House of Commons. The sudden shift in policy has already sparked speculation about whether it is motivated by the upcoming elections, given Trudeau's recent tensions within the Liberal caucus and growing public dissatisfaction with his approach to immigration.
