Canada Scraps Automatic 10-Year Visitor Visas

IRCC recently announced significant changes affecting Canada’s visit visas. Previously, multiple-entry visas were typically granted based on passport validity, often allowing for a 10-year stay depending on the passport's expiration date. Now, these rules are shifting to be much more discretionary and aligned with individual circumstances, mirroring the approach seen with Schengen visas in Europe. Key changes include:

Validity and Entry

TypeIRCC visa officers now have the authority to determine whether applicants receive a single-entry or multiple-entry visa and to decide the visa’s validity length. Validity may vary widely, from six months to several years, based on the applicant's intent, frequency of intended visits, and other factors.

Visa officers will evaluate:

  • Purpose of Visit: Frequent travelers, like those visiting family, may be eligible for multiple entries, while single entries could be issued for one-time visits, such as business conferences or events.
  • Travel History and Compliance: Previous travel to Canada and compliance with local laws will play a role in determining eligibility for multiple entries.
  • Financial Stability and Employment: Applicants’ financial resources and employment status will be considered, especially for those seeking multiple entries.

Effect on Ongoing Applications

The changes apply immediately and could impact pending applications, as the policy does not distinguish between new and in-process applications.Importantly, those already holding valid visas remain unaffected by these updates, as existing documents will stay valid until their expiration dates. This update reflects the Canadian government’s stance on more regulated entry and is a noteworthy shift for prospective visitors to Canada.
