Immigration Minister Marc Miller plans to propose reforms to Canada’s immigration and asylum systems amid reduced permanent resident targets and stricter temporary worker rules.
Miller cited inefficiencies in the asylum system, where processing times average 44 months, and raised concerns over rising asylum claims from international students and inland applicants. Protesters disrupted his testimony, demanding fair treatment and permanent residency for all migrants.
Canada faces a backlog of nearly 250,000 refugee claims, with only 48,000 processed this year. Miller aims to prioritize permanent residency for those already in Canada, targeting 40% of new residents from this group.
