Study Without a Permit: Only for Some Work Permit Holders

Work permit holders who applied for their permits on or before June 7, 2023, are eligible to study in Canada without a study permit. Those who applied after this date are not eligible under this temporary policy, which is set to last until June 27, 2026.

Who Is Eligible?
To qualify for the study permit exemption, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Hold a valid work permit, applied for on or before June 7, 2023.
  • Have applied for a work permit renewal on or before this date and received work authorization from IRCC while waiting for a decision.

How Long Does the Exemption Last?
Eligible individuals can study without a study permit until:

  • Their work permit expires.
  • A decision is made on their work permit renewal application.
  • The policy ends on June 27, 2026.

How to Prove Exemption
To demonstrate your eligibility to a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), you can provide:

  • A valid work permit.
  • An acknowledgment of receipt (AOR) from IRCC for your work permit extension.
  • A work authorization letter.
  • An email from IRCC confirming your eligibility under this policy.
