4,700 Sudanese Refugees to be Resettled in Canada by 2026

Following growing calls from Sudanese Canadians, Ottawa has pledged to resettle 4,700 refugees fleeing the ongoing civil war in Sudan. The federal government will provide support for 4,000 refugees, while 700 will be admitted through private sponsorship.

Additionally, Canada is reopening its family reunification program for Sudanese Canadians on February 25, accepting 1,750 more applications, bringing the total to 5,000. The immigration ministry estimates that these applications will lead to approximately 10,000 people resettling in Canada through their family sponsors.

Despite these changes, concerns remain over the program’s limited scope, long wait times, and high financial demands. Many applicants struggle with expired documents and dangerous conditions while gathering paperwork. Critics also point to unequal treatment compared to refugees from other conflict zones.
