The federal government is introducing new measures to address labor shortages in construction.
Up to 6,000 undocumented construction workers will gain legal status, allowing them to continue working with proper protections. Of course, the number of undocumented construction workers in Canada is far higher than this figure. This expands on a previous pilot, though details on implementation and eligibility are still pending.
New Apprenticeship Rule
Starting March 7, foreign apprentices will no longer need a study permit to complete their training in Canada, removing a key barrier for many workers.
Advisory Council on Construction
A new council, including government, union, and industry representatives, will advise on wages and workforce needs. The council will determine how many foreign construction workers Canada should admit, with a potential target of 14,000.
These changes aim to tackle labor shortages as Canada struggles to meet housing demands.
