Understanding the CRS Score and How to Improve It

If you’re applying through Express Entry, your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score decides how likely you are to get invited for permanent residency.

What Is the CRS Score?
The CRS ranks you based on:

  • Age (best points at 20–29)
  • Education
  • Language ability (IELTS/CELPIP for English, TEF/TCF for French)
  • Work experience
  • Spouse’s profile (if applicable)
  • Bonus factors like French skills or a provincial nomination

CRS scores range from 0 to 1,200. The higher your score, the better your chances.

What’s New in 2024–2025?

  • Job offers no longer give extra CRS points (as of March 2025)
  • Category-based draws now target specific occupations (like healthcare, STEM, trades, or French-speaking candidates)

These are Express Entry rounds focused on priority job sectors — not just top CRS scores.

  • French and Canadian work experience matter more than ever

How to Improve Your CRS Score

  • Retake language tests to reach CLB 9+
  • Get a Provincial Nomination (PNP) – worth 600 points!
  • Earn more work experience, especially in Canada
  • Upgrade your education or add a second credential
  • Order an ECA (Educational Credential Assessment)

This verifies that your foreign degree is equal to a Canadian one.

  • Include your spouse’s education or language score

Tip: Update your Express Entry profile every time you improve a factor. Even small gains can lead to an invitation.
