Johnny Noviello, a 49-year-old Canadian citizen, died while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a federal detention center in Miami on June 23. He was found unresponsive in his cell and was pronounced dead shortly after 1:30 p.m. despite resuscitation efforts. The cause of death is under investigation.
Noviello had entered the U.S. legally in 1988 and became a permanent resident in 1991. He was convicted in Florida in 2023 of racketeering, drug trafficking, and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a crime, serving a 12-month sentence. ICE arrested him in May 2025 and charged him with removability based on his criminal record.
Global Affairs Canada confirmed his death and stated that consular officials are in contact with U.S. authorities. Privacy laws prevent further details from being released at this time.
