Express Entry: Smarter Strategies, Better Results

Canada’s immigration system is full of opportunities for those who plan ahead, especially through Express Entry. Many temporary residents, including international students and work permit holders, are actively using smart strategies to strengthen their profiles and achieve permanent residency, such as:

Upskilling
More people are studying for master’s degrees after work permits expire to gain extra CRS points and buy time for permanent residency (PR) opportunities.

Language skills
CLB 9 and 10 in English and CLB 7 in French are now common, with French speakers earning up to 62 extra points. Some even move to Quebec to learn French faster.

Foreign experience
Many candidates are returning to their home countries or working remotely to gain one year of foreign work experience, which can add 50 CRS points. Smart applicants split this into two 6-month jobs in different priority categories to qualify for multiple Express Entry draws.

PGWP changes
If you’re planning to study in Canada, consider choosing a program in a priority occupation under Express Entry. Canada has recently aligned Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility with these high-demand fields. Even programs like culinary arts, which were previously ineligible for PGWP, are now included, creating more pathways to permanent residency.

These trends suggest category-based Express Entry draws and occupational priorities are likely to continue through 2025-2027, with only minor adjustments.
