IRCC warns Immigrants and refugees of scam calls

Canada's Immigration Ministry is warning of a scam that is targeting members of the immigrant and refugee communities primarily in the Greater Toronto and Vancouver areas. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says it has received reports of people receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to represent the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). The calls are made to appear as though they are coming from the IRB or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Those called are told they are under investigation and told to pay a sum of money.
In a news release, IRCC said the IRB will never ask its clients for money. The board is currently working with law enforcement agencies to identify the perpetrators.
IRCC says anyone receiving a similar call should hang up immediately and contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
If you have been a victim of this scam, IRCC says you should call your local police department.
