10 Common Reasons Your PGWP Could Be Refused

Applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) seems simple, but even small errors can lead to refusal. Here are the most frequent causes:

1. Ineligible Program
Not all programs qualify. Since 2024, only approved fields of study listed under IRCC’s CIP codes are eligible. Check before applying.

2. Part-Time Studies
You must study full-time in every semester except your final one. Any other part-time term makes you ineligible.

3. Unauthorized Work
Working more than 24 hours per week off-campus, or without proper authorization, can lead to loss of status and refusal.

4. Online or Overseas Studies
Remote learning no longer counts for PGWP eligibility if your program started after September 1, 2024.

5. Missing Language Test
From November 1, 2024, language results are mandatory, CLB 5 for college programs and CLB 7 for university degrees.

6. Late Application
You have 180 days after program completion to apply. Miss the deadline, and your PGWP will be refused.

7. Missing Documents
You must include proof of graduation, transcripts, language results, and medical exam (if required). Incomplete files are rejected.

8. Expiring Passport
Your PGWP will not exceed your passport’s validity. Renew it before applying.

9. Weak Temporary Intent
Officers must be convinced you’ll respect your permit conditions. Show genuine plans and ties outside Canada.

10. Inadmissibility
Medical, financial, criminal issues or misrepresentation can make you ineligible to stay or work in Canada.
