International students in Canada can gain valuable immigration advantages by working remotely for foreign employers while studying full-time.

Unlike regular off-campus work, remote work for companies outside Canada is not subject to the 24-hour weekly limit and can count as foreign work experience under Express Entry.

If the job is classified under TEER 0–3, this experience can contribute to CRS points. Candidates may earn up to 100 points through skill transferability factors when combined with language ability or Canadian work experience.

Remote work can also help students qualify for category-based draws, which often have lower CRS cutoffs. To be eligible, applicants need 12 months of experience in one occupation within the past 3 years, and as of 2026, this experience no longer needs to be continuous.

However, since work is part-time, reaching one year of experience takes longer. For example, working 15 hours per week requires about 2 years to meet the 1,560-hour requirement.

Students should also be prepared to provide detailed proof of their remote work when applying for PR, as this type of experience is less common.
