Canada is allowing certain Ukrainian nationals and their family members to extend their open work permits until March 31, 2027. This applies to those who arrived under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel.
Who can apply
Eligible individuals include those who arrived in Canada:
- On or before March 31, 2024, or
- Between April 1 and December 31, 2024
Applicants must hold valid temporary resident status both at the time of application and when a decision is made.
What is offered
- One-time work permit extension
- Valid for up to 3 years
What this means
The measure allows eligible Ukrainians already in Canada to continue working legally without needing to transition immediately to another immigration program.
Applications must be submitted through IRCC based on the applicable eligibility group.
Background
CUAET was introduced in 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, providing temporary protection in Canada. Around 300,000 Ukrainians and their family members have arrived under this program.
