Canada has removed the co-op work permit requirement for post-secondary international students.

As of April 1, 2026, students can complete required placements like co-ops, internships, and practicums using only their study permit, as long as the placement is a mandatory part of their program.

The change does not apply to secondary school students, who still need a co-op work permit.

This removes a separate application step and allows faster access to work placements.

To qualify, students must study full-time in a program of at least six months leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. The placement must be required and cannot exceed 50% of the program.

This does not change regular work rules. International students were already allowed to work off campus without a separate work permit, up to 24 hours per week.

There is no weekly hour limit for required placements, since they are part of the academic program.
