The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is reopening on May 21st, 2024, as announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Starting today, May 21st, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will send out 35,700 invitations to sponsors who submitted “Interest to Sponsor” forms for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This initiative aims to approve 20,500 applications for permanent residence (PR) within two weeks.

IRCC has announced that it has finished handing out some 23,100 invitations to apply to sponsors in the Parents and Grandparents Program for 2022.

Canada's Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) saw a 48.8% rise in new permanent residents in May, welcoming 3,185 individuals. This is a notable jump from April's 2,140. Despite this monthly increase, the year-to-date total of 11,115 remains 13.4% lower than last year's 12,830 for the same period.

The reopening of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) on May 21st highlights the ongoing limitations of the program. For the fourth year in a row, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will select applicants from the 2020 pool, leaving potential sponsors from subsequent years without an opportunity. However, the Super Visa offers an alternative route for Canadians to reunite with their loved ones.

Through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), your parent or grandparent will receive Canadian permanent residence and may eventually be able to apply for Canadian citizenship.

IRCC has indicated that more than 150,000 interested PGP sponsors remain from the group that submitted an expression of interest back in Fall 2020. Although there has yet to be any hint as to whether Canada will continue to draw from this candidate pool in 2023, the 2023-2025 Immigration Levels Plan may provide some insight into how the PGP will work next year.
