Eligible Canadian citizens can now renew their passports entirely online. The nationwide service became available on July 28, 2026, after the government removed the daily application limit used during testing.
Applicants must have a home and mailing address in Canada, and their passport must be expired or set to expire within six months. The passport must have been issued within the past 15 years as a regular adult passport, and applicants cannot use the service if it is damaged, seized or surrendered.
The application, payment and commercial digital passport photo can all be submitted through the new IRCC Portal. Applicants will receive status updates online, while the standard processing target is 20 business days plus mailing time. Anyone needing a passport sooner must apply in person.
Mail-in and in-person applications will remain available. Under the government’s service guarantee, eligible applicants receive a full fee refund when processing takes longer than 30 business days, excluding mailing time and certain delays.
