Canada is one of the most popular destinations for international students who wish to gain a world-class education and experience life in a multicultural environment. To study in Canada for more than six months, international students are required to obtain a Study Permit, which also grants them temporary resident status.

What Is a Study Permit?

A Study Permit is an official document issued by the Government of Canada that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. It is not a visa, but it often comes with a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) that allows the student to enter the country.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for a Study Permit, students must:

  • Have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
  • Prove that they have sufficient financial support for tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation
  • Have no criminal record and provide a police certificate if required
  • Be in good health and complete a medical exam if necessary
  • Convince the immigration officer that they will leave Canada once their permit expires (unless they are eligible to apply for permanent residence later)

Rights and Benefits of a Study Permit Holder

Holders of a valid study permit may:

  • Work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during academic sessions and full-time during breaks, without a separate work permit
  • Apply for an open work permit after graduation through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP)
  • Bring family members to Canada as temporary residents
  • Extend or renew their study permit if they continue their studies

Temporary Residency Status

Every study permit holder in Canada automatically holds temporary resident status for the duration of their studies. This status means that the person is legally allowed to stay in Canada for a temporary period, as stated in their permit. Once the study program ends, they must either:

  • Apply for an extension (e.g., Post-Graduation Work Permit or new study program), or
  • Leave Canada when their temporary status expires.

Conclusion

Obtaining a Study Permit and temporary resident status in Canada is an important first step for many international students toward achieving their educational and career goals. With careful preparation and accurate documentation, studying in Canada can be a life-changing opportunity that opens the door to global experiences, career advancement, and even permanent residency.

If you complete more than one study program, you may qualify for a longer Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to three years, provided that:

  • Both programs are completed within two years of each other.
  • Both programs are completed within two years of each other.
