Master's Graduates Get 3-Year Work Permit Boost

Starting today, master's students in Canada can now look forward to a three-year post-graduation work permit (PGWP), even for programs shorter than two years.

This change, announced by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), aims to better integrate master’s graduates into the Canadian labor market by offering extended work opportunities. Previously, the duration of a PGWP closely matched the study program's length, but this revision reflects a recognition of the valuable skills and potential contribution of master's graduates.

Additionally, upcoming amendments will restrict spousal work permit eligibility to partners of master’s and doctoral students, aiming to refine the work permit process further. This policy adjustment underscores Canada's commitment to attracting and retaining skilled international students by aligning immigration opportunities with educational achievements.
