Canadian Provinces demand an increase in Skilled Immigrants Acceptance

Alberta Wants Cap on Economic Immigrants Raised

Alberta requested that Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) raise the number of economic immigrants it can nominate each year in order to meet its growing labour needs. The province anticipates it will need 96,000 new workers by 2023.

Currently, Alberta can nominate 5,500 new workers per year. Jobs Minister Ric McIver said lifting the cap would help Alberta’s economy especially in the energy, beef, and tourism industries.

Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program Receives More Nominations for 2015

The Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program will be processing 5,500 nominations in 2015, an increase of 775 compared to 2014. The Government of Saskatchewan says the increase will help to address labour shortages.

The number of nominees in Saskatchewan has increased from 1,517 in 2007 to 5,500, an increase of over 250%.

Due to Saskatchewan’s increase, Manitoba is also expected to receive an increase in nominations in 2015.
