Federal officials from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada are subject of telephone scamming.

Immigrants and new citizens receive a call on their home phone and are identified by their name. The scammer informs that they have failed to report or update their Immigration file.

They regularly refer to Bill C-24 and ask them to pay $2,500 fine within an hour or face deportation or loss of citizenship.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre is asking the public to protect themselves against immigration fraud since the immigration would never contact clients by phone or collect fines to avoid deportation.

The immigration always promotes payment of fees through a bank and does not request payments by pre-paid credit cards or through private money transfer services.

People are also advised to contact the IRCC call centre (1-888-242-2100) and do not trust their caller display.
