Skilled-worker routes are for people who qualify mainly from work, education, and language. They are not investment programs and they are not family sponsorship. A job offer still matters in some of them. In much of Express Entry, a job offer no longer raises the rank.
Your options
- Federal (Express Entry) — live outside Quebec. Three programs share one pool: Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades. Invitations go to the highest scores, sometimes only inside a category such as French, health care, or a trade.
- Quebec — not Express Entry. The portal is Arrima (the menu says Arima). The main program is the PSTQ. French is the centre of selection. The Quebec Experience Program has only a short receipt window, through 31 October 2026, and only for people who already met the old conditions on 19 November 2025.
- Other Provinces (PNP) — a province or territory nominates for its own labour market. The nomination is not permanent residence by itself. Some streams add 600 points inside Express Entry. Others are a separate federal application after the nomination.
Which door fits which history
- One year of skilled work in Canada in the last three years points to the Canadian Experience Class, or to a provincial stream for people already working in that province.
- One continuous year of skilled work abroad, with strong language and education, points to the Federal Skilled Worker Program.
- A trade, plus a job offer of at least one year or a provincial certificate of qualification, points to the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
- Work and French in Quebec point to the PSTQ, not to an Express Entry profile that names Quebec.
- A genuine job offer in one province often points to that province’s nominee program. The province decides whether the stream is open.
How we can help
- Match the work history to one door, and say clearly when two doors are being mixed.
- Check whether a job offer still helps. Since 25 March 2025 it adds zero Comprehensive Ranking System points, but it can still be required for trades, many provincial streams, and a work permit.
- Tell you whether the next step is an Express Entry profile, an Arrima declaration, or a provincial expression of interest.
- Prepare that step, and the permanent-residence application that follows an invitation or a nomination.
