What Does Canada Look at When Reviewing a Visitor Visa Application?

Canada’s immigration department has outlined some of the main factors officers consider when reviewing visitor visa applications.

According to IRCC, officers look beyond just the documents submitted and assess the applicant’s overall circumstances, including:

  • travel history
  • employment and immigration status
  • family ties outside Canada
  • work and education background
  • purpose of the trip
  • financial ability to support the visit
  • supporting documents
  • whether the applicant is likely to leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay
  • health, security, and criminal admissibility

IRCC says visitor visa applications are reviewed individually, meaning there is no fixed formula that guarantees approval.

For example, the department does not set a universal minimum bank balance or travel-history requirement. Having limited travel history or a certain employment situation also does not automatically lead to refusal.

In some cases, applications may also be referred to CBSA or CSIS for additional screening, although IRCC has not specified exactly what circumstances trigger those referrals.

IRCC has also confirmed that Canada uses more than 40 broader criteria when deciding visa requirements for different countries, but these are separate from the assessment of an individual visitor visa application.
For applicants, the main takeaway is that officers are looking at whether the entire application makes sense together: the purpose of travel, finances, personal circumstances, ties outside Canada, and the likelihood of leaving after the visit.
