Canada still had more than 510,000 job openings in the second quarter of 2026, but the latest data shows that demand is stronger in some fields than others.
Some of the biggest increases were seen in skilled trades, transportation, manufacturing and technology-related jobs.
Truck driving, material handling, installation and service work all recorded more vacancies compared with last year. Demand also increased for some tech positions, including software developers, programmers and user support technicians.
Workers with trade certificates or diplomas also faced less competition than other education groups, while vacancies requiring a university degree declined overall.
For newcomers, the main takeaway is that Canada’s job market is becoming more occupation- and location-specific. Looking at where your profession is actually in demand may now be more useful than focusing on Canada’s total number of job vacancies.
Having an in-demand occupation can improve employment opportunities, but it does not automatically create an immigration pathway. Applicants still need to meet the requirements of the relevant federal or provincial program.
